I had such a crush on Greg in the early 70's. What great musicians those prog guys were! ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, PG's Genesis, Rush, Kansas, Supertramp...etc. Hubby and I are making a concerted effort to see all the old musicians/bands before we lose them. Fortunately for me, I saw many of these bands in the 70's. Great times.
I watched the ELP 1974 California Jam video and found it very odd that Greg Lake was chomping on gum whilst singing. Yes, Keith Emerson was chomping on gum also, but he didn't sing. I've never seen any other videos with gum chewing whilst singing.
Prog dies out. Love beach flops. The crowds fade. He can’t get on the charts anymore. New genres and younger bands hit the scene and they get all the fame Greg lake did in the early - mid 70’s. The 80’s came and went and by the 90’s he probably had realized that you can’t stay on top forever and that he had a really good career while ...
TIL that Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and King Crimson wrote his first song "Lucky Man" at the age of twelve. Twelve years later in 1970 it charted in multiple countries and is still in heavy rotation on Classic Rock stations today
When Giles and McDonald quit, Lake wanted to keep working with Fripp under a new band name. Fripp wanted to replace the 2 and carry on the KC name. They disagreed and Lake hung till Fripp could replace him fully. I’ve Emerson/Lake and Lake solo. He put a good number number of “his” KC songs into the set. Chilling. 8.

Greg Lake seems like a good guy in interviews, and I really appreciate him as a musician. Good vocalist with a warm voice, very sound bass player with a particularly aggressive attack in ELP. Shame to see this was written in 2013, probably discounts any chance of a Lake appearance in King Crimson at this point.
At least, that was my assumption about the gum chewing when I saw that concert on video (that Lake was trying to quit smoking). On the other hand, I don't think Emerson ever smoked, so that wouldn't explain his gum chewing.....
Knife Edge and Lucky Man are probably two of the more accessible. Bitches Crystal is super fun to play. If you like those bouncing fourths, check out the first couple minutes of Tarkus. That one’s pretty intense but really satisfying once you get it down.
