The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is an Indian central public sector undertaking which is the largest government-owned oil and gas explorer and producer in the country. It accounts for around 70 percent of India's domestic production of crude oil and around 84 percent of natural gas .
On 28 March 2003, ONGC acquired A.V. Birla Group's stake and further infused equity capital of ₹600 crores making MRPL a majority-held subsidiary of ONGC. The gas field was discovered in 2008 by a consortium of three Indian companies, led by the state-owned ONGC Videsh with a 40% stake; the other companies were Indian Oil Corporation (40%) and Oil India (20%). [3] [4] The consortium had signed an exploration agreement in 2002 for the Farsi block, where the gas field was found. [5]
