Once leaving Rockingham, the road continues as a two-lane road traveling east-northeast, with occasional wider sections with a center turning lane. Passing Rockingham Speedway, the road widens to a divided expressway (two lanes in each direction) and meets the northern end of North Carolina Highway 177 (NC 177).
