The parish was established as an offshoot of St Theresa's in Cross Gates in 1954. The first services were held in a builders’ canteen using the oven as an improvised altar. Later the newly-completed school hall was used. The church uses an Italian Romanesque style and was designed by Desmond Williams of architects Arthur Farebrother & Partners.
