The Catholic Home Missions is an organization founded in 1924 by the American Board of Catholic Missions (ABCM) with the aim of helping and supporting poor dioceses in the United States. [1] Their effort focuses principally on providing religious education.
Father Serra first established the original mission in Monterey at this location on June 3, 1770, near the native village of Tamo. However, Father Serra became engaged in a heated power struggle with Military Governor Pedro Fages, who was headquartered at the Presidio of Monterey and served as governor of Alta California between 1770 and 1774. The new cathedral was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel on June 25, 1976. [4] The bell tower and bells were consecrated in July 1977. A local group bought the old church in 1985 and converted it into a performing arts center named the Mount Carmel Centre.
