Denys Finch Hatton was born in Prince of Wales Terrace, Kensington, on 24 April 1887, [1] [2] the second son and third child of Henry Stormont Finch-Hatton, 13th Earl of Winchilsea, and his wife, the former Anne Codrington, daughter of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Codrington. The Finch-Hatton family was old and aristocratic.
It has been held by the Finch-Hatton family of Kent, and united with the title of Earl of Nottingham under a single holder since 1729. [1] The Finch family is believed to be descended from Henry FitzHerbert, Lord Chamberlain to Henry I (r. 1100–1135). The name change to Finch came in the 1350s after marriage to an heiress of the Finch family. [2]

Finch-Hatton died in February 1823 at the age of 75 at Eastwell Park surrounded by "his tenderly attached and afflicted family". [28] His wife died in June 1825, aged 65. Their eldest son George William Finch-Hatton succeeded in the Earldoms of Winchilsea and Nottingham in 1826.
