The Paraguayan War (Spanish: Guerra del Paraguay, Portuguese: Guerra do Paraguai, Guarani: Paraguái Ñorairõ), also known as the War of the Triple Alliance (Spanish: Guerra de la Triple Alianza, Portuguese: Guerra da Tríplice Aliança, Guarani: Ñorairõ Triple Alianza Rehegua), was a South American war that lasted from 1864 to 1870.

During the War of the Triple Alliance, Paraguay lost 25–33% of its territory to Argentina and Brazil. The worst consequence of the war was the catastrophic loss of population. At least 50% of Paraguayans died during the conflict, numbers to which it took many decades for the country to return.
The various sections should be more balanced in size. "Declaration of War" and "The Treaty of the Triple Alliance" can be merged. So can "The first Brazilian reaction", "The battle of Riachuelo", and "The retreat of the Paraguayan troops". The "The end of the war" section either needs to get more subsections or to be merged with something else.
The wide variety of positions he assumed in the post-war era are in great part a result of the small amount of able men of the political elite in Asunción (a consequence of the terrible loss of life in Paraguay during the Triple Alliance War).
The Viscount of Taunay provided an eyewitness account of the battle in his book Recordações de Guerra e de Viagem (Memories of War and Travel). Each year in Paraguay, August 16th is marked as " Día del Niño del Paraguay " ( Children's Day of Paraguay) to commemorate the memory of the children who lost their lives in the battle.
