The José Celestino Mutis botanical garden is Colombia's biggest botanical garden. It serves both as a recreation and research center with an emphasis on Andean and Páramo ecosystems. [ 1 ] The garden is located in Bogotá and features plants from every Colombian altitude, climate and region.
It is one of the largest urban parks in the world with over 1000 acres of green spaces, bicycle paths, parks, sports complexes, a public library and the Bogota Botanical Gardens. The park is named after the Latin American Liberator Simón Bolívar.

There are botanical gardens and arboreta in all states and territories of Colombia, most are administered by local governments, some are privately owned.

The Royal Botanical Expedition headquarters moved in two different occasions. Initially it was based on the municipality of La Mesa (now in the Department of Cundinamarca), then in November 1783 it was moved to Mariquita (Department of Tolima). A botanical garden is a place where plants, especially ferns, conifers and flowering plants, are grown and displayed for the purposes of research, conservation, and education. This distinguishes them from parks and pleasure gardens where plants, usually with showy flowers, are grown for public amenity only.
