The 19th Arabian Gulf Cup (Arabic: كأس الخليج العربي) was the nineteenth edition of the biannual Gulf Cup competition. It took place in Muscat , Oman , from 4 to 17 January 2009, with Oman emerging as the winner for the first time in its history, [ 1 ] following a penalty shootout against regional rivals Saudi Arabia .
The idea for the tournament was established at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and the first Arabian Gulf Cup took place in 1970 which was won by Kuwait.Kuwait has been the most successful team in the tournament's history, winning 10 tournaments out of 26 in total, followed by Iraq with four titles, and Saudi Arabia and Qatar with three titles each.

After losing twice in the Gulf Cup final consecutively, Oman won the 2009 Arabian Gulf Cup tournament as hosts by defeating Saudi Arabia in a penalty shootout. Oman won the match 6–5 on penalties after the match had ended 0–0 at extra time. Oman maintained a clean-sheet throughout the tournament. [13]
