Gairsain (Hindustani: [ɡɛːrˈsɛːɳ]) is a town in Chamoli district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand near state's summer capital Bhararisain. [2] A town and Nagar Panchayat, Gairsain is situated at the eastern edge of the vast Dudhatoli mountain range, and is located in Chamoli district almost at the centre of the state, at a distance of approximately 250 kilometres from Dehradun. [3]

Mehalchauri (Garhwali : Melchōrí) is a village in Gairsain Tehsil located in Chamoli district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. [1] It is situated in Garhwal mandal nearby the center of the Garhwal and Kumaon mandal. Mehalchauri is 1,350 metres (4,430 ft) above sea level and is the source of the Ramganga River.
N. Dixit commission, set up to decide the location of a permanent capital, rejected Gairsain as too prone to earthquakes. [1] In 2012, due to local demands, then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Vijay Bahuguna held cabinet meetings in Gairsain and started construction of an assembly building in Gairsain.
It is seated at Dehradun, the winter capital, and Gairsain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand. The total strength of the assembly is 70 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
