Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. Its county seat and largest city is Washington. [3] As of the 2020 census, the county population was 5,530. [1] The county was named for George Washington, the 1st president of the United States.
The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.71. In the city, the population was spread out, with 17.9% under the age of 18, 2.6% from 18 to 24, 20.2% from 25 to 44, 16.0% from 45 to 64, and 43.3% who were 65 years of age or older.
Washington was established in spring 1860, and in the same year named county seat. [4] Until the end of the American Civil War it was protected by two stockaded buildings, the Washington Company House and Woolbert's Stockade Hotel.
