The Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) (Sindhi: لياقت يونيورسٽي آف ميڊيڪل اينڊ هيلٿ سائنسز) is a public medical university located in Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. Pedestrian path at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences.
The seats are limited as there are some 3405 seats for admissions solely based on previous academic record (locally called open merit format) in public medical colleges and some 216 open merit seats in public dental colleges of Punjab only. In addition, some seats are reserved for foreign and dual nationality holders.
Entrance into the medical colleges is based on merit under the guidelines of PMC. Both the academic performance at the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) (grades 11–12) and an entrance test like NMDCAT determine eligibility to enter most of the medical colleges. [citation needed]
The college is affiliated with National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) [3] [4] and is recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. The Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, also known as Liaquat University Hospital (LUH), is a 2200-bed tertiary care hospital in Hyderabad, Sindh.It is one of the largest teaching hospitals affiliated with Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, the first medical university of public sector in Pakistan.
The university offers graduate level courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, allied health sciences and biomedical engineering. [3] Undergraduate level courses in medicine and dentistry are offered in affiliating campuses only.
King Edward Medical College was established in 1860 as the Lahore Medical College.It is the fifth oldest medical school in South Asia, after Medical College Kolkata (January 28, 1835), Madras Medical College, Chennai (February 2, 1835) Grant Medical College, Bombay (1845) and Sarojini Naidu Medical College Agra (1854).
The university was granted a charter by the government of Pakistan in March 2023. The LUMS Board of Trustees comprises members of the domestic business community, academics and government representatives. The principal functions of the board are to set policy guidelines and to review the operations of the university.
