Queen Margaret Academy (Scottish Gaelic: àrd-sgoil/Acadamh banrigh Maighread) is a Roman Catholic secondary school in the south of Ayr in southwest Scotland. Queen Margaret Academy is the fifth largest secondary school in South Ayrshire, with a total of 680 pupils enrolled at the school in 2023–2024. [ 1 ]
Based on figures from 2023–2024, a total of 6,596 pupils attend secondary schools across South Ayrshire, with Belmont Academy in Ayr being the largest in terms of pupil numbers, with a total of 1,225 pupils attending Belmont Academy. In contrast, Carrick Academy has the smallest school roll, with a total of 391 pupils attending the school. [30]
The school is one of four Catholic secondary schools in the Diocese of Galloway, with the others being Queen Margaret Academy, Ayr, South Ayrshire, St Matthew's Academy, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire and St. Joseph's College, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway. In 2023, the school roll stood at 648 pupils, with an FTE allocation of 45.8FTE teaching staff.

The school has existed, in various guises, since 1233, [5] although it did not come to be known as Ayr Academy until 1794, when a Royal Charter converted the school into Ayr Academy. It moved from the Sandgate to a new location situated on Fort Street in 1800, with a further extension to the building added in the 1930s.
