The current 5th congressional district was created in 2002 due to reapportionment following the 2000 U.S. census. Due to slow population growth, Connecticut lost a seat and the old Waterbury-based 5th district was merged with the New Britain-based 6th district. However, the merged district contained more of the old 6th's territory.
The new 5th largely maintained the distinguishing feature of the old 5th – the I-84 corridor connecting Danbury to Waterbury, and then stretching southeastward to Meriden. And similar to the old 6th district, the 5th takes in most of Litchfield County and the towns of the Farmington Valley in Hartford County.

The 2nd congressional district is located in eastern Connecticut and includes Enfield, Norwich, New London, and Groton. The incumbent was Democrat Joe Courtney, who was re-elected with 59.4% of the vote in 2020. [1] Courtney ran for and won re-election in 2022.
