Llanfairpwll railway station, also signposted as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, is a station on the North Wales Coast Line from Crewe to Holyhead, serving the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales.
The long name was supposedly contrived in 1869 as an early publicity stunt to give the station the longest name of any railway station in Britain. [17] According to Sir John Morris-Jones the name was created by a local tailor, whose name he did not confide, letting the secret die with him.
The longest officially used station name on Britain's railway network is in fact Rhoose Cardiff International Airport, in South Wales. o In 1853 a station called Merthyr High Street was first opened on the present day site of Merthyr Tydfil. It was rebuilt on part of the original site in 1974 and again in 1996. [27] [3]
The Beeching cuts had a significant impact on rail transport in Wales, closing a large number of railway stations. Since then some stations have reopened in Wales and following Welsh devolution, the Wales and Borders passenger rail franchise was established in 2001 and the operator was taken into public ownership by the Welsh Government in 2021.
Following its recent reopening with a new name (the station was known as "Rhoose" before it closed in 1964), [1] this station now holds the distinction of having the longest name for a station as recognised by National Rail in the UK, in both English (33 letters, excluding spaces) and Welsh (Maes Awyr Rhyngwladol Caerdydd Y Rhws – 28 letters, as dd, ng and rh are single letters in Welsh).
The first station in Holyhead was opened by the Chester and Holyhead Railway on 1 August 1848, but this was replaced by the second on 15 May 1851. [2] The present station was opened by the London and North Western Railway on 17 January 1866 [2] and still retains its overall roof. It is believed to be the longest train shed in Wales. [1]
