The village of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania—at the center of what became Shaler Township—was established in the early 19th century, beginning with a log sawmill built by John Shaw, Sr. after he bought 600 acres (2.4 km 2) of land north of Pittsburgh in 1800. The area became known as "Shaw's Glen", and later Glenshaw.

Shaler's teams are all nicknamed "The Titans." Shaler athletics compete in the WPIAL/PIAA AAAA/AAA divisions depending on sport. Shaler's biggest rival is the neighboring North Allegheny Tigers and North Hills Indians, who also compete in the same section. Shaler's softball team took home numerous PIAA and WPIAL titles from 2000 to 2009.
