The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (abbreviated as AFCON 2017 or CAN 2017), known as the Total 2017 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, was the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the biennial international men's football championship of Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Group G of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification tournament was one of the thirteen groups to decide the teams which qualified for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament. The teams in the group played against each other home-and-away in a round-robin format , between June 2015 and September 2016. [ 1 ]
A total of 52 teams entered the tournament, including the hosts which qualified automatically for the final tournament.The draw for the qualification stage took place on 8 April 2015, immediately after the announcement of the host nation, [2] originally scheduled at 12:30 UTC+2 at the Marriott ‘Zamalek’ Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, [3] but delayed to 15:00. A 26-man provisional squad was announced on 2 January 2017. [35] The final squad was announced on 4 January 2017, with Fatau Dauda replacing an injured Adam Kwarasey, while Raphael Dwamena, Joseph Larweh Attamah and Abdul Majeed Waris were being left out of the team. [36]
In July 2017, two changes were proposed: [28] [29] switching the timing of the competition from January to the Northern Hemisphere summer and expanding from 16 to 24 teams (effective from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations). On 20 July 2017, the CAF Executive Commission approved the propositions at a meeting in Rabat, Morocco. [5]
