In 1970, LANSA Flight 502 crashed after taking off from the airport and killed 99 out of the 100 on board. On February 3, 2017, President Kuczynski announced the beginning of the construction of the new Chinchero International Airport , [ 2 ] which will be located in the suburb of Chinchero , 30 minutes from the city of Cusco.
Peru and South Korea announced on 24 October 2019 that South Korea would collaborate on the construction of the airport, providing technical assistance. [6] At the time of unveiling plans for the airport, the anticipated opening date was 2021. [7] However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru, the opening of the airport was delayed to 2025. [4]
Despite being classified as international, the airport does not feature any scheduled international nonstop flights. The airport has one of the longest runways in Latin America and the longest in Peru. The airport was named after Inca Manco Cápac, founder of the Inca civilization in Cusco.
The new airport commenced operations on 20 February 2013 following the closure of the old airport the night before. The first flights scheduled to arrive at the new airport were TAME flight 302 from Guayaquil (domestic), and LAN flight 2590 from Lima, Peru (international). Arrival times were scheduled for 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. respectively.

The cause was continued flight into instrument conditions, which was against company procedures.
