Modern cross-country skiing is similar to the original form of skiing, from which all skiing disciplines evolved, including alpine skiing, ski jumping and Telemark skiing. Skiers propel themselves either by striding forward (classic style) or side-to-side in a skating motion (skate skiing), aided by arms pushing on ski poles against the snow.
Founded in the early 1980s, Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan, initially focused on skiing. In 1987, it introduced the Masterpiece Course, its first golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The 1990s saw significant growth with the addition of The Premier and The Signature Courses, and the par-3 Threetops course.
The state park includes a campground, day-use area, and network of four-season trails for summer hiking and winter cross-country skiing. The Old Growth Forest Trail to the pine grove is a loop 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles (2.0 km) long. The Old Growth Forest is an even-aged stand of pines estimated to be between 350 and 375 years old.
