Russell Springs is a home rule-class city [5] in Russell County, Kentucky, in the United States. The city is the gateway to Lake Cumberland, one of the largest man-made lakes in the region, created by Wolf Creek Dam. It is the largest city in the county, having a population of 2,441 during the year 2010 U.S. Census.
Ballville Township was established in 1822 after a petition was submitted to the Sandusky County Commissioners to be set apart as a new township. Prior to the petition the township was part of the Sandusky Township. [4] It was named for Colonel James V. Ball, a military leader in the War of 1812. [5] It is the only Ballville Township statewide.
In 1827 the township was named Russell, although it had been previously known as the West Woods by neighboring communities. In April of that year the people elected John Lowry, Clark Robinson, and Gideon Russell as their first township trustees. It was Robinson that created the first framed building and started the first store.
The community was established in 1826 to be the seat of the newly formed Russell County.It was briefly known as Jacksonville in honor of General Andrew Jackson, [9] who had just won a plurality of the popular vote during the 1824 presidential election but lost the runoff in the House of Representatives, largely because of the "corrupt bargain" struck by Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams.
