The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a public medical school located in Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Until 2008, it was affiliated with the University of Dhaka. Currently it is affiliated with Bangladesh University of Professionals. A major general of Bangladesh Army's medical corps is the Commandant of the college. [1]
The Army Pathological Laboratory (APL) was established as a small laboratory in 1951 as part of the Pakistan Army. [1] After the independence of Bangladesh it became part of the Bangladesh Army. In 1974, APL was restructured and re-equipped with modern equipment. [2] [3] [4] In 1987, the institute was awarded the Independence Day Award.
Directorate General of Medical Service, is the highest policy making organization of Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Armed Forces Nursing Services. Beside its regular activities, the hospital facility was used during Dengue outbreak in 2019 as an extension unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital to accommodate large number of dengue patients. [19] [20] In 2020, this hospital was used as COVID-19 treatment center in collaboration with Dhaka Medical College Hospital. [21]
The institute was established on 30 December 1977 with the support of British Military Advisory Team. The college is run by Bangladesh Armed forces. [1] A British Military Advisory Team (BMAT) headed by a Chief Instructor, was the founding and driving force in running the training curriculum in the initial days of the college.
