The number of constituences in Scotland reduced from 59 to 57 at this election. The Labour Party's vote went up by 16.7% and their number of MPs increased from 1 to 37, mainly in Scotland's Central Belt. This was at the expense of the Scottish National Party (SNP), whose vote share dropped by 15% and their number of MPs reducing to single figures.

He previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland from 2015 to 2016 and again from 2020 to 2024.
