The only pro is that it is chaep and easily available. The many cons include: Corrosion may be deep into the steel. Microcracking ( not visible to the eye) may cause the blade to form larger cracks or break in use. Exact makeup of the spring is hard to know. Springs haven't been 5160 for a long time.

    1) Make your knife from a hard file - Use the file almost as is to make a simple knife. I agree 100%. One thing out of order and the whole knife can be ruined. Hopefully we can all share our mistakes and find the best methods moving forward. That is the heart of the knife and what you are after. To me someone putting together kits or putting handles on blades is not making a knife. Just my opinion. I've done it and know what it feels like. All it really takes is desire to make a knife. A file and piece of steel like 5160 and you can make a great knife.

    862. Mar 14, 2019. #2. Great for certain handle materials. If you buff the edges of a kydex sheath it looks really good. I'll also buff a blade that I'm doing a satin finish on. It helps to see if I missed any scratches. All that being said, none of this requires a buffer it's just handy. The buffer ìs great as long as you don't impale yourself.

Bo Bergman's book - Knifemaking is the best book on Puuko and Nordic knifemaking. Not everyone needs this book, but everyone should read it sometimes. These three books are learning classics: David Boye's book Step-by-Step Knifemaking is very good, but it covers a lot of stuff not related to todays knifemaking.
