In May 1867, the post office was renamed "Spring Lake", which was also the name of a station on the Detroit, Grand Haven and Milwaukee Railway (later part of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad). Spring Lake Township is a civil township of Ottawa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 15,296 according to the 2020 census, up from 14,300 according to the 2010 census. M-104 is a state trunkline highway in the US state of Michigan in the Western Michigan region of the state. It runs from Ferrysburg to Nunica in Ottawa County, passing through Spring Lake. The highway serves as a connector between Interstate 96 (I-96) and US Highway 31 (US 31), helping connect Grand Haven with the Grand Rapids metro area.
In 1855 Spring Lake Township was detached from Norton and organized as a township in Ottawa County. Also in 1855 the village of Black Lake was settled with a railroad station and a sawmill in Norton Township. [5] Norton Township was separated from Ottawa County in 1859 and became a part of Muskegon County.
Most of the area is served by the Stanwood ZIP code 49346, [6] although "Canadian Lakes, Michigan", is an acceptable name for mail delivery by the post office. [7] The village of Stanwood is 7 miles (11 km) west of the community. Small portions of the CDP are served by other postal delivery areas.
