The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning four. McLaglen won Best Actor for his portrayal of Gypo Nolan, beating out Charles Laughton , Clark Gable , and Franchot Tone for the better-remembered Mutiny on the Bounty , and Ford won Best Director .
Davis won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, but always felt it was a consolation prize for not having been nominated for Of Human Bondage the previous year, [5] and believed that Katharine Hepburn should have won the award for her performance in another 1935 film, Alice Adams. [6]
Despite historical inaccuracies, the film was a huge box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1935 and one of MGM's biggest hits of the 1930s. The film was also a major critical success, and received a leading eight nominations at the 8th Academy Awards, winning Best Picture.
