The Lycoming IO-720 engine is a large displacement, horizontally opposed, eight-cylinder aircraft engine featuring four cylinders per side, manufactured by Lycoming Engines. [ 1 ] There is no carbureted version of the engine, which would have been designated O-720 and therefore the base model is the IO-720.
The engines all employ hydraulic tappets which operate in aluminum guides that are machined into the crankcase. The tappets are built from four parts, a cam follower body, cup, cylinder, and piston and operate with clearances of 0.03 in (1 mm) to 0.11 in (3 mm). The pushrods are steel and feature pressed-in ball ends. [1]
Output is 167–185 PS (165–182 hp; 123–136 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 25–25.8 kg⋅m (245–253 N⋅m; 181–187 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. It has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses Multi-port fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder, and features powder metal-forged, fracture-split connecting rods.
Aluminum offers lighter weight at the expense of strength, hardness and often cost. However, with care it can be substituted for many of the components and is widely used. Aluminum crank cases, cylinder blocks, heads and pistons are commonplace. The first airplane engine to fly, in the Wright Flyer of 1903, had an aluminum cylinder block. [1]
That said, transverse & inline engines use different blocks. A notable example is the cast-iron Chevy 3.4L "L32" longitudinal version, designed for rear-drive applications. For high-airflow heads that are made from aluminum, The heads and intake from the "3400" Pontiac Grand Am GT "FWD" are a direct bolt-on. Dodge Viper V10 engine
Ironically, the over-bore limit of 1 mm is also stated in the paper with the correct resultant displacement of 1,595 cc (83.55 mm x 72.75 mm, 1,595.42 cc). [ 11 ] The cylinder head has hemispherical combustion chambers (correct statement would have been "pear shaped chambers" since this has implications on the angle of the valves).
All M112 engines have silicon/aluminum (Alusil) engine blocks with a 90° vee angle. The aluminum SOHC cylinder heads have 3 valves per cylinder. All use sequential fuel injection with two spark plugs per cylinder. All have forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, iron-coated aluminum pistons and a magnesium intake manifold.
The 3.5 D has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses Multi-port fuel injection , has 4 valves per cylinder , and features forged steel connecting rods . It is designed to run on "regular" unleaded gasoline rather than the premium fuel used in many other high-output V6 engines.
