Secondary cold agglutinin syndrome occurs when autoantibodies bind to red blood cells, rendering them subject to attack by the complement system. [17] It is a result of an underlying condition potentially associated with either monoclonal cold-reacting autoantibodies or polyclonal cold-reacting autoantibodies [16] predominantly caused by infection or lymphoproliferative disorders. [16]
Only one study has estimated incidence and prevalence adults. In Denmark in 2016 the annual incidence was 1.8 per 1,000,000 person years, and the prevalence was 21.3 per 1,000,000 living persons. [4] In pre-pubertal children the incidence has been estimated to be between 0.7 and 1.2 per 1,000,000 person-years. [32] [33]
Among American ethnicities, G6PD is most prevalent among African Americans, with a prevalence of about 12.2% (males) and 4.1% (females). [27] During the Korean War, many black soldiers developed acute hemolytic anemia after primaquine for treatment or prophylaxis of malaria, which led to early understanding of this kind of anemia.
