The Myer family is an Australian retailing dynasty of Jewish origin. It was founded in Australia by Sidney Myer, who started the department store Myer, and Merlyn Myer, his wife. Following the death of Sidney Myer in 1934, his nephew, Sir Norman Myer, continued much of his retailing dynasty.
On her 20th birthday, 8 January 1920, she married Melbourne retail businessman Sidney Myer; she was his second wife. Her husband, who was originally named Simcha Baevski, arrived in Australia as a penniless Russian immigrant in 1899. He was a businessman and entrepreneur, who founded the Myer retail company.

Marigold Merlyn Baillieu Southey, Lady Southey AC (née Myer; born 2 May 1928) is an Australian philanthropist who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria from 2001 to 2006. Lady Southey was born in San Francisco into the Myer family , the youngest of four children of Sidney Myer and Dame Merlyn Myer ( née Baillieu ). [ 1 ]
Born in San Francisco, California on 7 November 1922, Neilma Baillieu Myer was the elder daughter of Merlyn (née Baillieu) and Sidney Myer. [1] The family moved back to Melbourne, Australia in 1929. [2] In 1952, following her divorce, she studied for a Bachelor of Arts in English literature [3] and creative writing at Stanford University. [2] [4]
The Myer retail group was founded by Sidney Myer, who migrated from Belarus to Melbourne in 1899 after the height of Victoria's gold rush, with very little money and little knowledge of English to join his elder brother, Elcon Myer (1875–1938), who had left Russia two years earlier.
