Hallgrímskirkja, a modern church in Reykjavík Iceland in the North Atlantic Map of contemporary Iceland. The history of Christianity in Iceland can be traced back to the Early Middle Ages when Irish hermits settled in Iceland, at least a century before the arrival of the first Norse settlers in the 870s.
Hallgrimskirkja towers over the center of Reykjavik, and its 73-meter high tower provides a wonderful view over the entire city. Building work started in 1945, and the church was finally consecrated on October 26, 1986. The state architect, Guðjónn Samúelsson (1887-1950) designed the church. He drew richly on Icelandic traditions and materials.
The church was consecrated on 28 July 1957 and is dedicated to Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614–1674), who was the pastor of the local parish between 1651 and 1669. [ 3 ] Icelandic State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson (1887–1950) was the first to draw a model of the church and it was according to his design that the foundations were cast.
