Alberta Advanced Education was founded on November 25, 2004 by an Order-in-Council, with Dave Hancock serving as inaugural minister. Alberta Advanced Education was created after the Ministry of Learning was split into the ministries of Education and Advanced Education.
When Alberta established its six sector advanced education system in 2007, it also clearly defined roles and responsibilities for three categories of research: pure, applied, and scholarly. Pure research is defined as exploratory and primarily conducted by Comprehensive Academic and Research Institutions (CARI).

This is one of the original portfolios in the Government of Alberta: the first Minister of Education was part of the original cabinet in 1905, and that title existed continuously until 1999. The ministry was briefly merged with Alberta Advanced Education to form Alberta Learning from 1999 to 2004, but was recreated under its original name in 2004.
In February 2018, Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt announced that Grande Prairie Regional College would transition to a university in order to offer degrees in the local community. [29] In 2019, it was further announced that Red Deer College would also transition to a university. [ 30 ]
