The men's hockey team was founded in 1998 as a member of the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Hockey League (WPCHL). In 2001, the team joined the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League. That year, the team won the Milan Mountaineer Invitational Hockey Tournament at West Virginia University. [44]

The 2020 WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the 61st tournament in conference history. It was scheduled to be played between March 6 and March 21, 2020 on campus locations. On March 12, 2020, the WCHA announced the remainder of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. [1]

The AAU hosts the Men's Division II National Tournament every March, hosting 20 teams (32 teams prior to 2024). Teams are split into five pools based on their national ranking. Winner of each pool advances to the Quarter-Finals plus three wild card teams. The overall winner is the AAU Division II College Hockey National Champion.

By winning the tournament, Lake Superior State received the WCHA's automatic bid for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
