One color entry in a single GIF or PNG image's palette can be defined as "transparent" rather than an actual color. This means that when the decoder encounters a pixel with this value, it is rendered in the background color of the part of the screen where the image is placed, also if this varies pixel-by-pixel as in the case of a background image .

Non-free but fair use book covers belong on Wikipedia, and can be found in Category:Non-free images of book covers. All non-free content should comply with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria policy. First edition covers are preferred.

This is a project to replace modern book covers used to illustrate articles about books in the public domain. These images are not really acceptable under the "replaceable" clause of our fair use policy , [ 1 ] since the books' original covers, title pages, etc. would be free.
To create single-color areas, the flood fill tool is often the easiest tool. First select an odd color (e.g. pink if there is no pink in the image) and experiment to find the right tolerance setting. Undo each time. Now you pick a main area color (try control-click while flood-fill is activated) and fill by clicking into each contiguous area.
