The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983, when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. [3] Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. The Cherokee was added to the Jeep lineup as a sporty two-door model in 1974. A four-door body was later added in 1977. Grand Wagoneer (1984–1991) The Wagoneer and Cherokee were replaced for 1984 by the smaller XJ Cherokee and Wagoneer. The SJ continued on as the Grand Wagoneer, the most opulent Jeep in the range.
