Bahia Honda (/ ˈ b eɪ ə ˈ h ɒ n d ə / BAY-ə HON-də, Spanish: [baˈia ˈonda]; lit. ' deep bay ') is an island in the lower Florida Keys. U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key 12 miles (19 km) west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.
Although Matheson bid on the property, Munroe arranged a sale, for US$20,000, to James Deering, the International Harvester heir and owner of the Villa Vizcaya estate in Miami. In 1914 Deering decided to develop his new land on the island as a tropical resort. He felt that Cape Florida's "future lies in making sales for homes."
Another community was also started at about the same time, named Island Beach, located south of it. [4] Longbeach gained its own post office in 1914. [ 8 ] During the early 1900s and prior to the 1921 hurricane, Longboat Key had a significant farming presence, with local residents growing a variety of products.
