At the Races in the Countryside or Carriage at the Races is an 1869 oil painting by the French painter Edgar Degas. The painting, which depicts a scene of a family in a horse-drawn carriage in the countryside, is on display at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. [1] The painting was shown at the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874. [2]
The painting reflects the rise of horse racing in France, following the influence of the British. [4] The work is thought to be the first painting to present horses coming directly toward the viewer, and it uses various techniques to reduce the sense of depth.
As a student, Degas had filled his notebooks with drawings of horses. During a tour of breeding farms with Paul Valpincon and after exposure to horse races, Degas appreciated the movement of the horses and the colors of the jockeys uniforms. He wanted to make his paintings seem spontaneous as if he'd captured a passing moment. [2]
Other paintings of horses by Géricault include Officer Hunter Horse of the Imperial Guard Charging (1812) and Race of Free Horses in Rome (1819). [2] This work is a rare and valuable example of painting dated from his travel in England, when Géricault preferred to work in lithography. It was painted for the English horse dealer Adam Elmore.
In 1927 he explained his work as follows:The secret of painting race-horses lies in quickness. Their movements are so alert, they are so full of nervous energy, that the artist has to have a hand like a streak of lightning to catch the pose while it lasts. [5] His paintings of race horses, nearly all on commission, are oil-on-canvas.
Stubbs's Molly Long-legs with her Jockey (1761–62), a more typical racehorse portrait (101 × 127 cm). Stubbs's knowledge of equine physiology was unsurpassed by any painter; he had studied anatomy at York and, from 1756, he spent 18 months in Lincolnshire where he carried out dissections and experiments on dead horses to better understand the animal's physiology.
