Dictionary of the Russian Language (Russian: Слова́рь ру́сского языка́) is an explanatory dictionary of the Russian language. The first edition was published under the editorship of Ozhegov in 1949. [1] It contained about 57,000 words; its 21st edition (1990) counted 70,000 word entries.
It contains about 220,000 words and 30,000 proverbs (3rd edition). It was collected, edited and published by academician Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (Russian: Влади́мир Ива́нович Даль; 1801–1872), one of the most prominent Russian language lexicographers and folklore collectors of the 19th century.
Transcription of Russian is based on the same standard, but deviates from it in order to consistently represent palatalization (always written with a following apostrophe, e.g. l', n', t', v') and the phoneme /j/ (always written j), both of which are spelled in multiple ways in Cyrillic.
