The church opened as St. George the Martyr Anglican Church on November 9, 1845, on land donated by the Boulton family (who lived in The Grange). It was the third Anglican parish in the city, after St. James's and Trinity. The Gothic Revival style church with 150-foot spire was designed by Henry Bowyer Lane. [3]
In 1340, Lord Thomas Berkeley rebuilt the church with only the stone bowl of the font remaining from the previous twelfth century structure. Today the nave, north aisle and bell tower remain from Lord Berkeley's rebuild with the original chancel being rebuilt in 1842. To the exterior above the west door the building is dated.
