I just revisited this divisive 1991 effort from "enfant terrible" Ken Russell. I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Theresa Russell's performance is alternately hilarious and at moments touching. The whole thing has such a surreal edge to it, which I think largely comes from the mostly-empty downtown LA nighttime shooting locations.
I met Theresa Russell at an autograph show in Chicago about ten years ago (don’t judge, DL!) She was a delight. I saw this as a double feature at the drive-in, playing with Lauren Bacall’s “The Fan.” Afterwards, I fantasized about the two male leads, Michael Biehn and Andrew Stevens, doing a movie together playing similarly crazy characters (without the murders), becoming obsessed with each other, and joining as a gay couple who work to overcome their nuttiness, go into hiding, and live happily ...

One of his best performances is as a parolee in 1978's Straight Time a criminally (pun intended) forgotten film with a terrific cast: Theresa Russell, Harry Dean Stanton, Gary Busey, M. Emmet Walsh, Harry Dean Stanton and a slim Kathy Bates all of whom are superlative.
