Cash price for 91 octane / $4.44 for 9.5 gallons =. Cheapest option: Cash price regular 87 octane / $4.14 for 9.5 gallons =. So here in California, I’d save $4 dollars filling up at half tank of gas if I were to pay cash and choose regular 87 octane vs. most expensive option 91 and pay with card.

:noidea: I don't know Chris. Personally I don't buy into the top tier stuff. Never had an allegiance to any brand, buy from whoever has the best price, if they are "top tier", so be it, if not, I fill up anyway and have never had a clogged fuel injector or any other fuel related problem.
E10 has 96.7% the energy content of gasoline (ethanol has 2/3 the energy content of gasoline, and you're only dealing with 10%). Pure gasoline is almost always more than 3.3% more expensive than E10, making it not worth it.
TECHRON is a powerful fuel system cleaner and a 20 oz. bottle is recommended once in 5,000 miles - its components are part of the additive package in TopTier gasolines. Google "top tier gasoline". 87 > 89 - questionable - butt dyno. MAYBE the PCM is "seeing" a mild knock at first acceleration due to sluggish/dirty EGR and is pulling a few extra ...

For 11 years I have been using BJ's 93 octane in my Z4 and 325. When I sold these cars (Z4 - 45K miles, 325 - 65K miles,) both their engines purrrred. And, for the past 4 years of ATS ownership, I have continued to use BJ's 93 octane without an engine problem, or a performance problem.
Suppose you had 1/2 tank of 87 and decided to fill with 93. That gives you a full tank of 90 - not enough to make much difference. Resist the advice and urge to dump various snake oils into the gasoline tank and oil pan. Totally unnecessary. Run a TopTier gasoline, brand immaterial - it's all pretty much the same "gasoline".
A lot of car manufacturers seem to take the position that if a car can only take premium gasoline, then it is a better car, better turned, or well, a premium brand. It is almost like "your piece of sh*t would take regular? nah, mine only takes the best". Look at the Toyota/Lexus combo. Many of the vehicles share the exact same engine.
Gasoline leaving U.S. refineries mostly via pipeline is an unbranded, fungible commodity. So gasoline bought locally comes from any one or combination of refineries connected to the pipeline. Since there's no pipeline to local gas stations, gasoline is delivered via pipeline to regional wholesale bulk distribution centers.
