Smith County is located in the region of the state known as Middle Tennessee. Its county seat is Carthage . [ 3 ] The county was organized in 1799 and is named for Daniel Smith , a Revolutionary War veteran who made the first map of Tennessee and served as a United States senator .

U.S. Route 70N (US 70N) is a northern alternate to U.S. Route 70, passing through parts of Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. It runs 86.0 miles (138.4 km) east–west from Lebanon to Crossville, connecting the cities of Carthage, Baxter, Cookeville, and Monterey.
South Carthage is traversed by U.S. Route 70N, and the highway's key intersection with State Route 25 and State Route 53 is located within the town's southeastern limits. The town is connected to Carthage via two bridges: the Cordell Hull Bridge on the west, and Veterans Memorial Bridge (which carries SR 25) on the east.
The triangle marker design was the only design until November 1983, when Tennessee divided its routes into primary routes and secondary or "arterial" routes with the adoption of a functional classification system, creating a primary marker and making the triangle marker the secondary marker; primary marker signs were posted in 1984.

The bridge carried Tennessee State Route 25 to its southern terminus at US 70N in South Carthage until 1990 when the route was realigned to a bypass around the northern and eastern edge of town. It was restored in the 2010s, and rededicated on July 2, 2012.
