Taqwa is an Islamic term for being conscious and cognizant of God, of truth, of the rational reality, "piety, fear of God". [7] [8] It is often found in the Quran.Al-Muttaqin (Arabic: اَلْمُتَّقِينَ Al-Muttaqin) refers to those who practice taqwa, or in the words of Ibn Abbas, "believers who avoid Shirk with Allah and who work in His obedience."
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. The New International Version translates the passage as: He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?"
It is pointed out by Robert Witham and others that people, in general, are afraid of prison, "but they are not afraid of hell fire. Most people fear temporal punishments, but do not think twice of the torments of eternal fire," that never dies (cf. Isaiah 66:24. [1] This follows up the previous verses where Jesus bids his disciples not to fear ...
In the Hebrew Bible, there is some recognition of Gentile monotheistic worship as being directed toward the God of the Jews. This forms the category of yir’ei HaShem/yir’ei Shamayim (Hebrew: יראי השם, meaning "Fearers of the Name"/"Fearers of Heaven", [1] [4] [19] "the Name" being a Jewish euphemism for Yahweh, cf. Psalm 115:11).
In 7:12–13 some said "he is a good man" whereas others said he deceives the people, but these were all "whispers", no one would speak publicly for "fear of the Jews/Judeans". Jewish rejection is also recorded in 7:45–52 , 8:39–59 , 10:22–42 and 12:36–43 . 12:42 says many did believe, but they kept it private, for fear the Pharisees ...
The fear of 666 (six hundred sixty-six) as the number of the beast is called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia ⓘ. [84] [85] Variant phobias are called hexakosioihekkaidekaphobia, which is the fear of 616 (six hundred sixteen), and hexaphobia, which is the fear of 6 (six). Known cases of these fears include:
The Wicked Husbandmen from the Bowyer Bible, 19th century. The Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen, also known as the Parable of the Bad Tenants, is a parable of Jesus found in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 21:33–46), the Gospel of Mark (Mark 12:1–12) and the Gospel of Luke (Luke 20:9–19). It is also found in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas.
Boring notes that "do not be afraid" is a standard angelic opening line in the Bible, which also appears in Genesis 21:17, Matthew 28:5, Luke 1:13, Luke 1:30, and Revelation 1:17. [7] The same note about the use of the term Holy Spirit applies here as in verse 18.
