The NCAA Division I field hockey tournament is an American intercollegiate field hockey tournament conducted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and determines the Division I national champion. The tournament has been held annually since 1981.
Field hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with 11 players in total, made up of 10 field players and a goalkeeper. Teams must move a hockey ball around a field by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal .
The tournament also included teams from Division II between 1984 and 1991 due to a lack of programs in that division; the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship resumed in 1992. The most successful team is The College of New Jersey, with 11 titles. Middlebury are the seven-time defending champions, defeating Tufts in the 2024 final, 2–1. [2]
