The AMC straight-4 engine is a 2.5 L inline-four engine developed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) that was used in a variety of AMC, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles from 1984 through 2002. The 2.5 L I4 Jeep engine shared design elements and some internal components with the AMC 4.0 L I6 that was introduced for the 1987 model year.
Jeep CJ; Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer; Kaiser Jeep was purchased by AMC in 1970. The Buick 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, AMC 232 I6, and AMC 327, 360 V8 engines in the FSJ Wagoneer and trucks used a 'nailhead' pattern TH400—also known as a "unipattern," as it was used by many other manufacturers (including Rolls-Royce and Jaguar) with an adapter ring—from 1965 to 1972.
The CEC also controlled ignition timing using information from the fuel-control section and an engine knock sensor on the intake manifold. The CEC module itself (the most common version of which is the "AMC MCU Super-D") was manufactured for AMC by Ford Motor Company , and worked with a Duraspark ignition system .
The early 2.1 L (128 cu in) Renault turbodiesel I4 used its specific control setup. The Jeep Wrangler (YJ) did not get the AMC 4.0 L I6 engine until 1991, when Chrysler-designed electronics accompanied it. Until then, it retained the AMC 258 cu in (4.2 L) engine with a carburetor. No other Jeep vehicle was equipped with Renix electronic controls.
The AW4 is also used behind the 2.5 L (150 CID) AMC Straight-4 engine. It has a removable bell housing with a mount for the crankshaft position sensor. Early AW4s used 21-spline output shafts. In 1991 the AW4 was changed to a 23-spline output shaft, concurrent with adoption of the High Output (commonly known as H.O.) inline six-cylinder engine.
The 'N' mode disengages the transfer case, transmission, and engine from the axles, thus enabling flat-towing the Jeep behind another vehicle. In 1983, the NP219-based Quadra-Trac system was replaced by the NP228/229-based Selec-Trac , adding a fuel-saving 2WD mode to the full- and part-time 4WD modes of Quadra-Trac.
