The installation instructions of the Vinyl Siding Institute and most (if not all) vinyl siding manufacturers allow vinyl siding to be installed over rigid foam sheathing. The illustration below comes from the Vinyl Siding Institute. The VSI installation manual notes, "When the fastener must penetrate through a non-nailable material such as foam ...

Hi, intending to re-side house with vinyl. 2x4 walls w/plastic under sheetrock and batt fiberglass in walls. Plywood sheathing on exterior. Worried about leaks and trapping moisture. www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/can-vinyl-siding-be-applied-over-furring...

A Q&A post wonders whether vinyl siding should be installed over furring strips. Although some builders apparently do so, advice from manufacturers seems contradictory. Wall assemblies that incorporate rigid foam insulation over exterior sheathing, followed by furring strips and siding, are becoming common. The extra layer of insulation helps ...

Unfortunately the situation gets more complicated at the exterior. Working out from pine sheathing: Tar paper, asbestos shingles, a very thin (1/4" or less) yellow foam board insulation, then vinyl siding. We intend to replace vinyl in next few years (It is well past useful life), but will have to leave asbestos.

Most people will use foil faced polyiso in this application. I would use regular 1x4 (or ripped 3/4” plywood, which is probably better) vertical furring strips here and not try to cut in 2x4s in the way you are describing. Cutting in 2x4s eliminates the advantage exterior rigid foam usually has of being a continuous air barrier, and all the ...

I am installing vinyl siding on a home in Pittsburgh PA as part of a HUD financed project. As such, HUD has supplied the specs. The requirement is for R1 fanfold followed by Tyvec. I think that the principal function of fan fold has traditionally, pre-house wrap, been to limit air infiltration (not provide R value), a function that is in this case served, redundantly, by the by the Tyvec ...

IRC 2021 states if using foam plastic insulating sheathing in conjunction with a Class II vapor retarder (e.g., Kraft-faced fiberglass insulation) there are certain continuous insulation requirements, for instance R-value > or = to 3 over 2×4 wall. 2. You have come up with a way to air-seal the perimeter of the rigid foam to limit air flow through the gaps between the siding and the foam. (This is a challenge. It requires attention to detail.) The only reason to consider this approach, in my mind, is if the siding contains lead or asbestos.

  11. Vinyl siding over 2″ foam, no strapping? - Green Building Advisor

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/question/vinyl-siding-over-2-foam-no-strapping

Planning to apply ARB over boards, then 2″ polyiso, then vinyl siding. Window/door openings will be picture-framed with boards inset into the foam layer (3/4″ board over 1 1/4″ foam). Other penetrations will be treated like windows. I would like to use thicker foam but roof overhang is only 12″ and adding 2″ to 3″ is about max.
