Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox (née Lady Charlotte Gordon; 20 September 1768 – 5 May 1842) [1] was a Scottish aristocrat and peeress best known as the hostess of the famed ball held in Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Quatre Bras.
Charlotte lived the first ten years of her life in England before her father, who was a lieutenant in the guards, moved the family to Albany, New York in 1738, [2] where he was lieutenant-governor. He died in 1742. Lennox's experiences in the colonies probably inspired her first and last novels, Harriot Stuart (1750) and Euphemia (1790). [2]
The Duchess of Richmond's Ball was a ball hosted by Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond in Brussels on 15 June 1815, the night before the Battle of Quatre Bras. Charlotte's husband Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, was in command of a reserve force in Brussels, which was protecting that city in case Napoleon Bonaparte invaded.

Lady Charlotte Gordon (Gordon Castle, 20 September 1768 – London, 5 May 1842); married 9 September 1789 at Gordon Castle, Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, and had issue. She was the hostess of the Duchess of Richmond's Ball—"the most famous ball in history", [8] and eventually inherited all of the vast estates of the Gordon family.
