Assumption University originated from Assumption Commercial College in 1969 as an autonomous higher education institution under the name of Assumption School of Business. It adopted the name from the precedent school " Assumption College " given by Rev. Fr. Emile August Colombet, a French missionary in Siam, in 1885.

Assumption College (Thai: โรงเรียนอัสสัมชัญ) is a Roman Catholic all-boys private school in Bangkok, Thailand. The school was founded by Father Emile-August Colombet on 16 February 1885, and is the first school founded by the Order of Brothers of Christian Instruction of St Gabriel .
In 1918, after the First World War ended, the demand for schools and education in Bangkok sharply increased. At that time, the Brothers of Saint Gabriel had established only one school in Bangkok, Assumption College. As a response to increasing demand, Brother Martin de Tours proposed opening a new school in Bangkok.
2004: Assumption College Thonburi opened its "English Program." 2009: Girls were admitted to the school for the first time.
