The town is at the eastern end of the Lolo Trail, present-day U.S. Route 12, which crosses Lolo Pass at the Idaho state line 33 miles (53 km) west of town. U.S. Route 93 also passes through the community. Missoula is 10 miles (16 km) to the northeast via US 12, while Hamilton is 37 miles (60 km) to the south via US 93.

The founding of the small historical railroad and ranching town of Livingston is a direct result of the Northern Pacific Railway (NPR). This site became a centralized point in the Rocky Mountains and the NPR's location for railroad shops to service their steam trains before ascending the Bozeman Pass, the line's highest point, located immediately west.

Norris Hot Springs is 0.4 miles (0.6 km) east of the town, and an agricultural experiment station operated by Montana State University - Bozeman is at Red Bluff, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) east on Highway 84. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Norris CDP has an area of 0.34 square miles (0.88 km 2), all of it recorded as land. [1]
