The first canoe built by Old Town Canoe was constructed in 1898 behind the Gray hardware store in Old Town, Maine. Unlike the pioneering canoe businesses established by E.H. Garrish, B.N. Morris, and E.M. White, the Grays were not canoe builders themselves, but were entrepreneurs who hired others to design and build their canoes. [4]

It contains the headwaters of the West and Middle Branch of the Saint Regis and the Saranac Rivers. Only two of the lakes can be reached without a portage, or carry as it is known in the region. The town is in the southwestern part of the county, southwest of the village of Malone and west of the village of Saranac Lake. The town is within the Adirondack Park. It includes the 58 ponds of the Saint Regis Canoe Area, presently the only Canoe Wilderness Area in the park, as well as most of 4,700-acre (19 km 2) Upper Saranac Lake.

The race has drawn as many as 500 competitors from California to Florida, New Zealand and Canada paddling 250 canoes , kayaks and guideboats .
