The original University Hall was designed in the High Victorian Gothic style by Jacob Snyder, a prominent architect from Akron, Ohio. It was the first academic building for an Ohio college to stray from the Yale Report of 1828 , which directed buildings to be designed in classical styles.
University Hall was the first building on campus, built in 1873 and reconstructed in 1976. The proposal of a manufacturing and agriculture university in central Ohio was initially met in the 1870s with hostility from the state's agricultural interests and competition for resources from Ohio University, which was chartered by the Northwest Ordinance and Miami University. Orton Hall, one of the oldest remaining buildings on Ohio State University campus, opened in 1893 and is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as OSU's first president, Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899.
