Brighton is a city in Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 7,446. [4] Brighton forms part of the South Lyon-Howell-Brighton Urban Area. It is one of two incorporated cities in Livingston County and incorporates land that was part of Brighton, Green Oak, and Genoa townships.
The city of Brighton is located adjacent to the township, but is administratively autonomous. Pleasant Valley was a rural post office in the southeast of the township. Elijah Marsh was the first postmaster of the office, which operated from July 24, 1837, until July 29, 1852. [4] Marsh was succeeded by Peter Delamater and then by Melzer Bird. [5]
In 2004, Costco and Kohl's built stores off the Lee Road exit of U.S. Highway 23 in the northwest part of the township, just southeast of Brighton. In September 2006, a new shopping center, Green Oak Village Place, opened on the east side of US 23 at exit 58. [7] With the mall opening, the exit at US 23 had to be reconfigured.

Genoa Township is southeast of the center of Livingston County and is bordered to the northwest by the city of Howell, the county seat, and to the southeast by the city of Brighton. Interstate 96 crosses the township, with access from exits 140 and 141. The highway leads east 48 miles (77 km) to Detroit and west 41 miles (66 km) to Lansing.
